Biography Liz Jameson grew up in Brighton and has always been compelled and enchanted by the Sussex landscape; the big skies over the sea, the drama of the Downs and the soothing quality of the patchwork weald below all combine to provide an ongoing inspiration from the ever-changing moods of land, sea and sky.
After graduating from Jesus College, Cambridge with a MA in Classics, Liz lived and worked in London, New York and California where she was particularly taken by the American Abstract Expressionists such as Diebenkorn de Young and Mark Rothko. Their focus on light, textures and a strong use of colour to convey real feelings and actual places in a semi-abstract way has had a marked influence on Liz and her modern interpretation of the classic landscapes in front of her - she often paints ‘live’ on the sea-front in Brighton or looking out from her barn studio at the huge skies over the weald.
Liz also draws inspiration from the romance of her classical studies; the lost cities and lost horizons from times past hold an infinite fascination for her. Looking out at a view which has little changed for thousands of years but might somehow retain a lingering mood or memory of what came before pervades her paintings and provides a timelessness to their beauty and the feelings they provoke to the viewer.
Her painting style is to work and rework the canvas, using oils and sometimes enamels, attempting to capture the changing light and colours of the landscape. building a rich layering of colour that shimmers and changes appearance like the natural light and colour that inspired the work.
Liz has shown her work in galleries and exhibitions in Sussex and London and has pieces in many private collections in the UK and USA.
Liz is the proprietor of Riverside Art Gallery in Lewes, East Sussex and now shows her work at the Eton Art Gallery in Windsor.
