Biography Robert Greenhalf

Robert Greenhalf is one of Britain's leading wildlife artists. He is committed to working 'in the field' and it is this link with the natural world at all times of year and in all weather that suffuses his work and brings it alive.

Bob draws and paints directly from life around his home near Rye on the edge of Romney Marsh. The sense of place: of the landscape, the movement of wind, tide and light are just as important as the birds and animals that are in each finished piece. Working in watercolour allows the mood and feeling of the weather to permeate his work directly. If the weather is misty or damp, the paint dries slowly, allowing colours and outlines to blend. On a hot day the paint dries quickly and with crisp outlines. The woodcuts and oils are produced in the studio but use as their reference, watercolours and sketches made in the field.

Bob has exhibited widely in Britain and around the world. As a member of the Artists for Nature group he visited Poland in 1992, Extremadura in Spain in 1994 and Ireland in 1995. His work was later published in Portrait of a Living Marsh and Artists for Nature in Extremadura.
